Reasons To Consider Making A Holistic Facial Part Of Your Regular Routine

Working as both a Hair Artist AND a Holistic Facialist puts me in rather a unique position to be able to take care of both my clients’ hair AND skin.

I’ve noticed a real difference between the way people view and value each of these services.

It seems that in general people tend to think that they ‘need’ to have their hair cut or coloured but see a facial as more of a luxury or an occasional treat.

My holistic facials follow the same principles of a standard facial in terms of routine (minus steaming and extractions) but with lots more focus on massage, a particular interest in plant based ingredients, crystal tools and a wider focus on you as an individual and how you are feeling both emotionally and energetically.

I’ve written this post to share my thoughts on the benefits of making a holistic facial part of a regular routine and why they are such a good investment in overall health and wellness.

A holistic facial encourages you to pause fully without distraction - a treat for your mind.

Very rarely do I get through a haircut or colour these days without a client checking their phone at least once.

During a facial, phones are out of sight and silenced, along with the rest of the outside world, giving you a rare opportunity to completely switch off and relax.

How many times would this otherwise happen in an average month?

This time allows your mind to take a well earned break, important because when you don’t give your mind a chance to pause and refresh, it doesn’t work as efficiently.

Think of it like re-charging your batteries. It’s true that we often spend more time concerning ourselves with charging our phone batteries than our own!

A holistic facial promotes touch as an integral part of human health - a treat for your body and brain.

We live in a touch deprived society, and for some, a professional service like a holistic facial may be one of the only times they receive human touch.

It’s incredibly beneficial to our bodies and brains to receive this kind of care from another person.

Massage therapy promotes a release of feel good hormones that help with relaxation.

It can also help to decrease stress hormones and turn ‘‘off’’ the sympathetic nervous system or SNS (flight or flight mode) and turn ‘‘on’’ the parasympathetic nervous system or PNS (rest and digest mode)

The PNS helps to lower blood pressure, promote digestion (That’s why a little tummy rumble mid facial is a very good sign that you’ve entered a deeper state of relaxation) eliminates waste from our bodies and promotes better sleep.

The results of these processes all contribute to a well rested, well repaired, glowing complexion.

A holistic facial gives you the opportunity for correct skincare product advice, taking the guess work out of it for you.

How much money have you wasted over the years on products that just didn’t deliver? How many half finished jars of lotions and potions have you got sitting around at home in your bathroom cabinet?

It’s a jungle out there! There is so much choice, too much in fact!

A little professional advice goes a long way in helping you to see beyond brand marketing hype and gimmicks and make better product choices that work for you and your skin.

Another thing I see often is people using active skincare ingredients without fully understanding how they work or what they do - sometimes this means they are actually exacerbating the very problem that they are trying to fix.

Knowledge is power.

A holistic facial with a lengthy formation of steps is not something that you are realistically likely to replicate yourself at home.

Even with the best intentions it’s unlikely that in our time deprived world you will regularly carve out a whole 60 minutes to cleanse, exfoliate, massage, gua sha, mask, tone and apply an array of skincare products all in succession.

And even if you try, you cannot replicate the effects of the touch of another person on your own, even with self-massage. Your nervous system is smart and recognises that it is your own hand touching your own face and the hormone release and nervous system effect is not the same.

A holistic facial is an all encompassing, self-care treat and a fine investment in your overall health and well-being.

How could something with this many benefits ever be considered frivolous?

Many first time holistic facial clients are so happy with the results afterwards that they wonder why it took them so long to try one out in the first place!

Allowing yourself to be cocooned in care, in a calm, safe environment is deeply comforting in a hectic world.

The soft lighting, mellow music, warm cloths, and sensorial aromas all contribute to an overall sense of peace and tranquility and the physical results will speak for themselves in the days, weeks, months (and years!) that follow.
